Background

GTU was created to consolidate technical and professional education in Gujarat under a single affiliating body. Prior to its formation, technical colleges in the state were affiliated with various general universities, including Gujarat University, Saurashtra University, Sardar Patel University and others. The new university was envisaged as a specialised institution to standardise curricula, examinations and quality benchmarks for engineering, pharmacy, management and allied professional courses.

Establishment

The university was established in 2007 through an Act of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, the Gujarat Technological University Act. Its headquarters were set up in Ahmedabad, with regional zones across Gujarat to administer affiliated colleges and conduct examinations. The university began functioning by taking over the affiliation of technical and professional colleges previously linked to multiple regional universities.

Academic structure

GTU primarily operates as an affiliating university, with degree-granting programmes delivered through its network of affiliated colleges. Programmes offered through these institutions typically include:

  • Bachelor and Master of Engineering / Technology (BE/BTech, ME/MTech)
  • Bachelor and Master of Pharmacy (BPharm, MPharm)
  • Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Computer Applications (MCA)
  • Bachelor of Architecture (BArch)
  • Diploma programmes in engineering and pharmacy
  • Doctoral (PhD) programmes across disciplines

The university also houses graduate schools and research centres in fields such as engineering and technology, management studies, pharmaceutical sciences and design, and conducts university-level examinations for affiliated institutions.

Campus and zones

The main administrative campus of GTU is situated at Chandkheda in Ahmedabad. To manage its wide affiliation base, the university has organised its operations into multiple zones across Gujarat, with examination and coordination offices in cities including Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat and Rajkot.

Significance

GTU is among the largest technical universities in India by the number of affiliated institutions and enrolled students. It plays a central role in shaping technical and professional education in Gujarat by setting common curricula, conducting standardised examinations, and coordinating accreditation-related activities for its affiliated colleges. The university is also associated with initiatives in innovation, start-ups and student entrepreneurship, supported through dedicated cells and incubation activities.
