Assam Women's University is a public university located in Jorhat, in the Indian state of Assam. Established by the Government of Assam under the Assam Women's University Act, 2013 (XXII of 2013), it holds the distinction of being the first women's university in Assam.

The university was created to provide higher education exclusively for women in Assam, addressing a long-standing demand for a dedicated women's institution in the state. The legal foundation for the university was laid by the Assam Legislative Assembly through the Assam Women's University Act, 2013.
During the initial setting up of the university, the state government appointed the Vice-Chancellor of Assam Agricultural University as its mentor, drawing on the administrative and academic experience of the older Jorhat-based institution.
On 12 September 2019, Jagdish Mukhi, the Governor of Assam and ex officio Chancellor of the university, appointed Malinee Goswami as the first Vice-Chancellor of Assam Women's University.
As the first women's university in Assam, the institution represents a milestone in the expansion of women-centric higher education in the North-East region of India. Its location in Jorhat places it within an established academic hub that also hosts Assam Agricultural University and other institutions of higher learning.
