Type State public university
Discipline focus Agriculture and allied sciences
Location Jorhat, Assam, India

Background

AAU was established to consolidate teaching, research, and extension activities in agricultural sciences in Assam under a single university structure, following the land-grant model adopted by Indian state agricultural universities. Its main campus at Jorhat brings together pre-existing institutions in agriculture and veterinary science that had served the region prior to the formation of the university.

Academic structure

The university is organised into faculties covering agriculture, veterinary science, home science, fisheries, and horticulture, with constituent colleges located across Assam. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes, and supports specialised research stations and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) that work directly with farming communities.

Research and extension

  • Crop improvement and varietal development suited to the agro-climatic conditions of the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys.
  • Livestock, dairy, and fisheries research relevant to north-east India.
  • Soil science, plant protection, and agricultural engineering.
  • Extension services through KVKs, regional research stations, and farmer training programmes.

Significance

As the leading agricultural university serving Assam and the wider north-east region, AAU plays a central role in training agricultural scientists, veterinarians, and extension professionals, and in developing technologies adapted to the region's distinctive ecology, including high rainfall, flood-prone alluvial plains, and tea-growing belts. Its research outputs contribute to crop varieties, livestock practices, and farming systems used by cultivators in the state.
