Background

The demand for a separate university in the Barak Valley was raised over several decades, given the region's geographical distance from Guwahati and the limited higher-education infrastructure available locally. The Assam (Central) University Act was passed by Parliament in 1989, providing the statutory basis for the institution. The university began functioning in 1994 with academic activity organised across schools of study rather than separate constituent colleges.

Campus and structure

The main campus, known as the Dargakona campus, is situated on the outskirts of Silchar amid hilly terrain. The university follows a school-based academic structure, with each school comprising several departments covering disciplines in the sciences, social sciences, humanities, languages, life sciences, technology, management, and education. In addition to the Silchar headquarters, the university operates a second campus at Diphu in the Karbi Anglong district, which caters to students from the hill districts of Assam.

As an affiliating university, Assam University extends affiliation to a number of undergraduate colleges spread across the districts of Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Dima Hasao, and Karbi Anglong.

Academics and research

The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, M.Phil., and Ph.D. programmes. Programmes are organised under schools such as those dealing with life sciences, physical sciences, environmental sciences, social sciences, languages, humanities, technology, management studies, and education. The university conducts research in regional languages and literatures, ethnobotany, biodiversity of the Barak Valley, social anthropology of Northeast India, and applied sciences, among other areas.

Governance

As a central university, Assam University is funded by the Government of India through the University Grants Commission. The Visitor of the university is the President of India. Academic and administrative authority is vested in the Vice-Chancellor, supported by statutory bodies including the Court, the Executive Council, the Academic Council, and the Finance Committee.

Significance

Its presence has contributed to local research output on the languages, ecology, and society of Northeast India, and to the development of professional and technical education in a region historically underserved by universities.
