Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), located in Dibrugarh in the eastern part of Assam, is one of the oldest and most prominent government medical institutions in northeastern India. It serves a dual role as a teaching institution for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and as a major referral hospital catering to patients from Assam and the wider northeastern region. The institution is administered by the Government of Assam and is affiliated to Dibrugarh University for academic purposes.
Given its location in upper Assam, AMCH holds particular significance for communities across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and other neighbouring states, many of whom depend on it for specialised medical care that may not be readily available at district-level facilities.
Assam Medical College was established in the mid-twentieth century, making it among the earliest medical colleges to be set up in the northeastern region of India. Its founding was part of a broader post-independence effort by the Government of India and state governments to expand medical education and healthcare infrastructure in underserved regions. Dibrugarh was chosen as the site partly due to its status as a major commercial and administrative centre in upper Assam and its connectivity to the tea-growing belt and oil-producing areas of the region.

AMCH offers the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree at the undergraduate level. Admission to the MBBS programme is conducted through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG), which is the common entrance examination for all medical colleges in India. Seats are allocated through the centralised counselling process managed by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for All India Quota seats, and by the Assam state counselling authority for state quota seats. Postgraduate admissions are similarly based on NEET-PG scores and subsequent counselling.
