Asian Paints was founded in February 1942 in a garage on Foras Road, Mumbai, by four friends — Champaklal H. Choksey, Chimanlal N. Choksi, Suryakant C. Dani and Arvind R. Vakil. The founders started the venture during the Second World War, when imports of paints into India were restricted, creating an opportunity for domestic manufacturers. The company was incorporated as Asian Oil & Paint Company Private Limited and was later renamed Asian Paints.
Over the following decades, the company grew from a small partnership-style enterprise into a corporate group with manufacturing plants across India and operations in several countries in Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the South Pacific. Asian Paints operates in the decorative coatings segment as well as in industrial coatings, the latter primarily through joint ventures.
