The station sits along the east–west alignment of Line 1, the first operational metro corridor in Mumbai. It serves the densely built commercial and residential neighbourhoods around Andheri and is one of the busiest stations on the line because of the transfer it offers to suburban rail commuters travelling on the Western Line between Churchgate and the northern suburbs.
Line 1 is an approximately 11.4 km elevated corridor running between Versova in the west and Ghatkopar in the east, with twelve stations. It was developed under a public–private partnership and is operated by Mumbai Metro One Pvt. Ltd., a joint venture led by Reliance Infrastructure. Commercial services on the line commenced in June 2014, making it Mumbai's first metro line and the first east–west rapid transit link across the city's northern suburbs.
By linking the Western Railway suburban network directly with Line 1, Andheri metro station functions as one of the most important multi-modal nodes in northern Mumbai. It eases east–west movement that earlier required slow road journeys through congested arterial roads such as Andheri–Kurla Road, and it supports access to the office clusters at SEEPZ, MIDC and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport area through onward stations on the line.
