Background

Andheri lies on the historic Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway (BB&CI) corridor, which later became part of the Western Railway zone of Indian Railways after the reorganisation of the railways in 1951. The station functions both as a halt for fast and slow suburban services and as a terminal for several short-haul locals that originate or terminate at Andheri to ease pressure on the line further north.

Layout and services

The station has multiple platforms catering to slow, fast and terminating suburban services on the Western Line. It is one of the few stations on the line where a number of suburban services originate or terminate, particularly during peak hours, allowing better turnaround between the Churchgate-bound and northbound services to Virar and Dahanu Road.

In addition to suburban EMU services, several long-distance mail and express trains halt at Andheri, given its proximity to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and the commercial belt of western Mumbai.

Metro interchange

The Mumbai Metro Line 1, which connects Versova in the west to Ghatkopar in the east, has a station adjacent to the suburban station. The metro station is connected to the suburban station by a foot overbridge, providing a direct interchange between the two systems.

Significance

Andheri is one of the highest-footfall stations on the Mumbai Suburban Railway network. Its importance is amplified by:

  • Proximity to major commercial districts including the SEEPZ and MIDC industrial estates.
  • Access to the suburb's entertainment, retail and residential clusters.
  • Interchange with the Mumbai Metro, easing east–west commuting across the city.
  • Close access to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport's terminals.
