Anand Vihar Terminal functions as a dedicated originating and terminating station for long-distance mail and express trains, primarily those operating towards eastern India, including services to Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and the north-eastern states. The terminal was conceived as part of the planning to redistribute long-distance traffic away from the saturated New Delhi and Old Delhi stations.
The terminal lies adjacent to the Anand Vihar Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT), making it a significant multimodal transport hub on the eastern edge of Delhi, close to the border with Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh. It is directly connected to the Anand Vihar metro station, which is served by the Blue Line and Pink Line of the Delhi Metro, providing onward connectivity to most parts of the National Capital Region.
By road, the terminal is linked through National Highway 9 and arterial routes leading into central Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad. The integration of rail, metro and inter-state bus facilities at one location makes it one of the busier transit nodes in the NCR.
As one of the five major railway terminals in Delhi — alongside New Delhi, Old Delhi (Delhi Junction), Hazrat Nizamuddin and Delhi Sarai Rohilla — Anand Vihar plays a key role in handling outbound traffic to the eastern parts of the country. During festival seasons such as Chhath Puja and Diwali, the terminal sees particularly heavy passenger movement on routes to Bihar and Purvanchal, with Indian Railways frequently operating special trains from this station.
