Overview

Ambarnath is one of the intermediate stations between Kalyan Junction and Karjat on the Central Line. It is positioned between Ulhasnagar to the west and Badlapur to the east. The station handles a high volume of daily commuter traffic, primarily passengers travelling towards Mumbai for work, as well as those moving between the satellite townships along the Kalyan–Karjat corridor.

Background

The Mumbai–Pune railway corridor, of which the Kalyan–Karjat section forms part, was among the earliest railway alignments in India, originally constructed by the Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR) in the mid-19th century. After Indian independence and successive reorganisations of the railways, the line came under the Central Railway zone, which was constituted in 1951.

Ambarnath town itself developed around mid-20th-century industrial activity, including ordnance and machine-tool establishments, and the station grew in importance as the surrounding region urbanised. The settlement is also known for the ancient Ambreshwar Shiva Temple, a 11th-century stone temple located near the station, which draws pilgrims and visitors.

Services and infrastructure

The station is served by Mumbai suburban EMU (electric multiple unit) services running between Mumbai CSMT, Kalyan, Karjat, Khopoli and Badlapur. Slow local services on the Central Line halt at Ambarnath; many fast services bypass the station. The line is electrified at 25 kV AC overhead traction. The station has multiple platforms with foot overbridges connecting them, ticket counters, automatic ticket vending machines and basic passenger amenities.

Significance

Ambarnath functions as the principal railhead for Ambarnath town and the surrounding Ambarnath Municipal Council area. Its connectivity to Mumbai via the suburban network has been a major factor in residential and commercial expansion in the area. The station also provides convenient access to the Ambreshwar (Ambarnath Shiv) Temple, a protected monument of architectural and historical interest.
