Althaf Salim entered the Malayalam film industry as part of a generation of younger filmmakers who emerged in the 2010s, alongside actors such as Nivin Pauly and directors associated with the new wave of Malayalam cinema. Before turning director, he worked behind the scenes in writing and assistant roles, gaining experience that informed his later work as a feature filmmaker.
Althaf Salim has appeared in supporting roles in several Malayalam films, often playing comic or quirky characters. His on-screen presence has made him a recognisable face among the ensemble casts of contemporary Malayalam productions.
His feature directorial debut, Njandukalude Naattil Oridavela, was released in 2017. The film, produced under a banner associated with Nivin Pauly, dealt with a family confronting the diagnosis of cancer in one of its members, and was noted for handling a serious subject through warmth and humour. Althaf Salim wrote the screenplay in addition to directing, and also appeared in the film.
Althaf Salim is regarded as part of the wave of Malayalam filmmakers who, from the mid-2010s onward, have favoured intimate, realist stories grounded in middle-class Kerala life. His work is often cited as an example of how mainstream Malayalam cinema has approached emotionally difficult subjects with a light, naturalistic tone.
