Ali Abbas Zafar is an Indian filmmaker, screenwriter and producer who works primarily in Hindi cinema. He is known for directing commercial entertainers, several of which have starred Salman Khan, including Sultan (2016), Tiger Zinda Hai (2017) and Bharat (2019). In recent years he has expanded into streaming projects through his banner AAZ Films, directing the Amazon Prime Video series Tandav (2021) and the action film Bloody Daddy (2023).

Ali Abbas Zafar studied at Hansraj College, affiliated to the University of Delhi, before moving to Mumbai to pursue a career in film. He began as an assistant director, working on projects within Yash Raj Films, where he developed scripts and gained experience in mainstream Hindi production.
Zafar made his directorial debut with Mere Brother Ki Dulhan (2011), a romantic comedy produced by Yash Raj Films starring Imran Khan and Katrina Kaif. The film performed well at the box office and established him as a young director with a feel for mainstream romance.
His second feature, Gunday (2014), was an action drama set against the backdrop of Kolkata's coal mafia and starred Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra. The film was also produced by Yash Raj Films and was released in Hindi as well as Bengali.
Zafar's collaboration with Salman Khan began with Sultan (2016), a sports drama about a Haryanvi wrestler, co-starring Anushka Sharma. The film was a major commercial success and is regarded as one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of its time. He followed it with Tiger Zinda Hai (2017), the second instalment in the Yash Raj Films "Tiger" spy franchise, which paired Salman Khan with Katrina Kaif and was loosely inspired by the 2014 evacuation of Indian nurses from Tikrit, Iraq.
Bharat (2019), an adaptation of the South Korean film Ode to My Father, again starred Salman Khan and traced the life of its protagonist against major events of post-Partition Indian history. It was produced by Salman Khan Films, T-Series and Reel Life Productions, with Zafar both directing and writing the screenplay.
After Bharat, Zafar set up his own production banner, AAZ Films, to develop both theatrical features and digital content.
In 2021, Zafar created and directed Tandav, a political drama series for Amazon Prime Video starring Saif Ali Khan, Dimple Kapadia and Sunil Grover. The series became the subject of public controversy and legal complaints over depictions of political and religious themes, leading to edits to the released content.
He returned to feature direction with Bloody Daddy (2023), an action thriller starring Shahid Kapoor, released directly on Jio Cinema. The film was an official adaptation of the French film Nuit Blanche. He has also been associated with developing further action and franchise projects, including the announced film Mere Husband Ki Biwi as a producer-writer.
Zafar's filmography is associated with large-scale, star-driven Hindi entertainers that combine action, romance and emotional family drama. His work with Salman Khan, especially Sultan and Tiger Zinda Hai, contributed to a string of high-grossing Eid releases in the late 2010s.
