Akshay Yadav is a member of the Yadav family of Saifai in Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh, a family closely identified with the founding and leadership of the Samajwadi Party. He is the son of Ram Gopal Yadav, a senior Samajwadi Party leader and Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, and a relative of party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.
Akshay Yadav contested the 2014 Indian general election from the Firozabad Lok Sabha constituency on a Samajwadi Party ticket and was elected to the 16th Lok Sabha. Firozabad, known for its glass industry, has been a seat of political importance for the Samajwadi Party and the Yadav family.
He sought re-election from Firozabad in the 2019 general election. The contest in that election drew particular attention because of a parallel candidature linked to another branch of the Yadav family.
