Akhilesh Yadav

Akhilesh Yadav is an Indian politician who served as the 20th Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. A leader of the Samajwadi Party (SP), he became the youngest person to hold the office of Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh when he assumed charge in 2012. He later took over as the national president of the Samajwadi Party, succeeding his father Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Background

Akhilesh Yadav belongs to the politically prominent Yadav family of Uttar Pradesh's Etawah region. His father, Mulayam Singh Yadav, founded the Samajwadi Party and served three terms as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Akhilesh pursued higher education in engineering, including studies in environmental engineering, before entering active politics.

Political Career

Akhilesh Yadav entered Parliament as a Member of the Lok Sabha from the Kannauj constituency, a seat associated with his family. He was active in the Samajwadi Party's organisational affairs and led the party's campaign in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election of 2012, in which the SP secured a majority on its own.

Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh (2012–2017)

Following the 2012 victory, Akhilesh Yadav was sworn in as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in March 2012. His tenure emphasised infrastructure projects, including expressway development connecting parts of the state, distribution of laptops to students, and metro rail initiatives in cities such as Lucknow. He held office until March 2017, when the Bharatiya Janata Party won a sweeping mandate in the state assembly election.

Party Leadership

In a public dispute within the Samajwadi Party in 2016–2017, Akhilesh Yadav emerged as the national president of the party. Under his leadership, the SP contested subsequent state and national elections, including alliances with other parties such as the Indian National Congress and, briefly, the Bahujan Samaj Party.

Subsequent Roles

After 2017, Akhilesh Yadav served as Leader of the Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. He has also served as a Member of the Lok Sabha, representing constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, and continues to lead the Samajwadi Party in state and national politics.
