Background

Jogi was born in 1946 in the Bilaspur region of what is now Chhattisgarh. He was educated as an engineer before clearing the civil services examination. He served briefly in the Indian Police Service and then in the Indian Administrative Service, holding district-level postings including as Collector of Indore and Raipur.

Political career

Jogi entered politics in the 1980s after leaving the civil services, joining the Indian National Congress at the encouragement of senior party leaders. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha and later to the Lok Sabha, representing constituencies in Madhya Pradesh and subsequently Chhattisgarh.

Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh (2000–2003)

When Chhattisgarh was created on 1 November 2000 through the reorganisation of Madhya Pradesh, Jogi was sworn in as its first Chief Minister, leading a Congress government in the new state. His tenure focused on establishing the administrative apparatus of the new state, including its capital at Raipur, and on welfare programmes targeted at tribal and rural populations, which form a substantial portion of Chhattisgarh's demographic base. The Congress lost the 2003 state assembly election to the Bharatiya Janata Party led by Raman Singh, ending Jogi's tenure as Chief Minister.

Later years and Janta Congress Chhattisgarh

Jogi continued as a Member of the Legislative Assembly from Marwahi and remained an influential figure in state politics. In 2016 he left the Indian National Congress and founded the Janta Congress Chhattisgarh (J), positioning the party as a regional alternative. The party contested the 2018 Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly election in alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party.

Death

Ajit Jogi died in 2020 in Raipur after a period of illness. His son, Amit Jogi, took on a leadership role in the Janta Congress Chhattisgarh (J) following his death.

Significance

As the founding Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Jogi played a defining role in shaping the early administrative and political character of the state. His career also illustrated the trajectory of senior bureaucrats moving into electoral politics, and his decision to form a regional party marked an attempt to create a distinct Chhattisgarhi political identity outside the two main national parties.
