Sharma was a prominent figure in Delhi's domestic cricket setup, contributing heavily in the Ranji Trophy and other first-class tournaments organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). His consistent run-scoring in domestic cricket led to selection for the Indian national side, where he featured in limited-overs internationals as well as Test cricket.
Despite a strong domestic record, his international appearances for India were limited, and the bulk of his cricketing reputation rests on his performances in inter-state competition.
Sharma's playing career was cut short following his implication in the match-fixing investigations that affected Indian cricket around the turn of the millennium. The fallout from these inquiries ended his involvement in competitive cricket.
Within the history of Delhi cricket, Sharma is remembered as one of the leading batsmen of his generation in the state's first-class side. His career also forms part of the wider narrative of Indian cricket during a transitional era between the 1980s and 1990s.
