ADA was established to provide a focused organisational structure for the design and development of indigenous combat aircraft in India. It functions as the nodal design agency for the Light Combat Aircraft programme, drawing on the technical capabilities of multiple national laboratories, public sector undertakings, academic institutions, and private industry partners. The agency works closely with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which is the principal manufacturing partner, and with laboratories under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
The Tejas is a single-engine, multirole, fourth-generation light fighter aircraft developed for the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy. ADA serves as the design authority for the programme, while HAL is responsible for production. Variants developed under the programme include the Tejas Mk1, the Tejas Mk1A with upgraded avionics and weapons capability, a twin-seat trainer version, and a naval variant intended for carrier-based operations.
ADA is also associated with the design effort for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), a planned fifth-generation stealth multirole fighter intended for the Indian Air Force.
ADA represents a key element of India's effort towards self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) in defence aerospace. By concentrating combat aircraft design expertise within a single agency, the organisation has helped consolidate national capability in areas such as fly-by-wire flight control, integrated avionics, and composite-structure airframes. Its work has contributed to the induction of indigenous fighter aircraft into the Indian Air Force and supports broader collaboration between government laboratories, public sector enterprises, and the domestic private aerospace industry.
