The Yellow Line was originally opened between Vishwavidyalaya and Central Secretariat in the mid-2000s as part of the first phase of the Delhi Metro. The northern extension from Jahangirpuri to Samaypur Badli was constructed under Phase III of the Delhi Metro project, and Adarsh Nagar lies on the older Vishwavidyalaya–Jahangirpuri section of the line.
The station follows the standard elevated configuration used on the Yellow Line, with the concourse level housing ticketing facilities, automatic fare collection gates and security screening, and the platform level above. Trains travel northbound towards Samaypur Badli and southbound towards HUDA City Centre.
The station is served by Delhi Transport Corporation bus routes along the GT Karnal Road corridor, along with auto-rickshaws, e-rickshaws and cycle rickshaws providing last-mile connectivity to interior colonies of Adarsh Nagar, Sarai Pipal Thala and surrounding areas.
Adarsh Nagar metro station improved public transport access for densely populated middle-class neighbourhoods of North Delhi, reducing dependence on the congested GT Karnal Road for commutes towards central Delhi, the academic precinct around University of Delhi, and onward to South Delhi and Gurugram via interchanges on the Yellow Line.
