The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) is the principal public bus transport operator of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, India. Headquartered in New Delhi, it operates one of the largest fleets of city buses in India and provides scheduled urban services within Delhi as well as inter-state services to neighbouring regions.

Overview
DTC operates city bus services across Delhi through a network of depots, terminals and bus stops, and complements the Delhi Metro as a primary mode of mass mobility in the capital. Its fleet has historically included standard floor diesel buses and, more recently, low-floor compressed natural gas (CNG) buses and electric buses introduced as part of efforts to reduce vehicular emissions in Delhi.
Background and history
Organised public bus services in Delhi trace back to the mid-twentieth century. The Delhi Transport Service was set up under the Government of India and was later reorganised as the Delhi Transport Undertaking (DTU) under the administrative control of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. In 1971, the undertaking was reconstituted as the Delhi Transport Corporation through an act of Parliament, the Delhi Road Transport Laws (Amendment) Act, bringing it under the direct control of the central government, and subsequently of the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi after Delhi acquired its present constitutional status.
Switch to CNG
Following directions issued by the Supreme Court of India in the late 1990s and implemented in the early 2000s, all DTC diesel buses were progressively replaced with CNG-powered buses. Delhi thereby became one of the first major cities in the world to operate an entirely CNG-based public bus fleet, a transition driven by concerns over urban air quality.
Modernisation
From the late 2000s, DTC inducted large numbers of low-floor and semi-low-floor air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned buses, partly in connection with preparations for the 2010 Commonwealth Games hosted in Delhi. In subsequent years, the corporation began the induction of battery-electric buses as part of the Delhi government's electric vehicle policy and broader programmes to reduce emissions.
Operations
DTC services are organised through a network of bus depots distributed across Delhi, supported by major inter-state and intra-city terminals. Key terminals associated with DTC and inter-state operations include:
- Kashmere Gate Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT)
- Sarai Kale Khan ISBT
- Anand Vihar ISBT
The corporation issues daily, monthly and concessional passes for students, senior citizens and other categories. Following a policy decision by the Government of Delhi, women passengers are offered free travel on DTC and cluster scheme buses through a pink-ticket scheme.
Cluster scheme
Alongside DTC, the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) operates the Delhi cluster bus service under a public-private partnership with the Government of Delhi. Cluster buses run on routes planned in coordination with DTC and share bus stops, ticketing arrangements and the common orange-and-green livery family used by Delhi's public buses.
Significance
As the capital's public sector bus operator, DTC plays a central role in everyday mobility for commuters, students and low-income residents, and acts as a feeder system to the Delhi Metro. Its fleet transition to CNG is regarded as a landmark case study in urban air-quality management, and its ongoing electrification is part of national efforts towards cleaner public transport.
