His elder brother Ajay Singh Chautala is also active in politics, and his nephews Dushyant Chautala and Digvijay Chautala have founded the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), a 2018 breakaway from the INLD.
Abhay Chautala has been associated with the Indian National Lok Dal, the regional party founded by his grandfather and led for many years by his father. He has been elected to the Haryana Vidhan Sabha from constituencies in the Sirsa region, an area regarded as a stronghold of the Chautala family.
Within the INLD, he has held senior organisational responsibilities and has served as Leader of the Opposition in the Haryana Legislative Assembly. After internal disputes within the family in 2018, which led to his nephews launching the JJP, Abhay Chautala emerged as a principal face of the INLD.
In 2021, in the context of the farmers' protests against the central farm laws, he resigned from the Haryana Assembly as a mark of solidarity with the protesting farmers, an action that received wide attention in Haryana politics.
Apart from politics, Abhay Chautala has been active in sports governance. His involvement in sports administration in Haryana, a state known for producing wrestlers and boxers, has been a notable aspect of his public profile.
As a senior leader of the INLD and a member of the Chautala family, Abhay Chautala occupies an important place in the politics of Haryana, where caste, regional identity, and family-based political networks play a prominent role. The internal divisions within the Chautala family, leading to the formation of the JJP, have shaped recent electoral politics in the state, with Abhay Chautala continuing to lead the INLD faction.
