Background
Ajay Singh Chautala was born into the Chautala family of Sirsa district, Haryana, a Jat political household that has been central to the agrarian and regional politics of the state since the 1980s. His grandfather Chaudhary Devi Lal founded the Lok Dal tradition in Haryana, served as Chief Minister of the state and later as Deputy Prime Minister of India in the V. P. Singh and Chandra Shekhar governments. His father Om Prakash Chautala served multiple terms as Chief Minister of Haryana.
Political career
Ajay Chautala began his political career within the Lok Dal stream of Haryana politics, working alongside his father in the Indian National Lok Dal. Over the years he has been elected to both Houses of Parliament as well as to the Haryana Vidhan Sabha, representing constituencies in the party's stronghold areas of southern and western Haryana, including the Dabwali region. He has been associated with the party's organisational leadership and with farmer- and youth-oriented mobilisation in the state.
In 2018, following internal differences in the Indian National Lok Dal, Ajay Chautala and his sons floated a new party, the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP), named in tribute to Chaudhary Devi Lal, who was popularly called Jannayak. The JJP went on to contest the 2019 Haryana Legislative Assembly election, in which it emerged as a significant force and entered into a coalition arrangement with the Bharatiya Janata Party in the state government, with his son Dushyant Chautala becoming Deputy Chief Minister of Haryana.
Junior Basic Trained teachers recruitment case
Ajay Chautala was a co-accused, along with his father Om Prakash Chautala and several officials, in the case relating to irregularities in the recruitment of Junior Basic Trained (JBT) teachers in Haryana in the year 2000. He was convicted by a Central Bureau of Investigation special court in Delhi in 2013 and sentenced to imprisonment, a verdict that was subsequently upheld on appeal. The case was a major event in Haryana politics and influenced the leadership trajectory within the Chautala family.
