The narrative follows Aarya Sareen, a wife and mother living an apparently genteel life in Rajasthan, whose family is connected to a clandestine pharmaceutical and narcotics enterprise. After her husband Tej Sareen is killed, Aarya is forced to step in to protect her three children and confront the criminal network in which her family is entangled. The series interweaves themes of family loyalty, motherhood, betrayal, and the moral compromises demanded by survival.
Aarya marked Sushmita Sen's return to acting after a long hiatus from screen work. Ram Madhvani, known for the feature film Neerja (2016), developed the project as an Indian adaptation of Penoza, a Dutch crime drama that originally aired on the Netherlands public broadcaster. The Indian adaptation transposes the story to Rajasthan, with significant portions filmed in and around Jaipur, lending the series a distinct visual identity drawn from the region's architecture and landscapes. The show is recognised for its long, continuous takes and naturalistic camera style, hallmarks of Madhvani's directorial approach.
The first season, comprising nine episodes, premiered on 19 June 2020 on Disney+ Hotstar. It introduces Aarya's family, the murder of Tej Sareen, and Aarya's reluctant entry into the family's narcotics operations. The season was widely noted for Sushmita Sen's performance and the layered portrayal of female agency within a male-dominated criminal milieu.
The second season was released on Disney+ Hotstar on 10 December 2021. It continues Aarya's struggle to keep her children safe while facing both rival cartels and law-enforcement pressure, and expands the scope of the conflict beyond her immediate family.
The third season premiered on Disney+ Hotstar on 3 November 2023, with additional episodes released subsequently. It follows Aarya's transformation into a more decisive figure within the underworld and explores the longer-term consequences of her choices on her children and associates.
Aarya received generally positive reviews from Indian critics, who praised Sushmita Sen's central performance, the writing, and the technical craft of the direction and cinematography. The series was selected for screening at the International Emmy Awards process, becoming one of the early Indian streaming dramas to receive an International Emmy nomination in the Best Drama Series category for its first season. The show is frequently cited as a landmark in the depiction of a female protagonist leading a long-form Indian crime drama, and contributed to broadening the range of women-led narratives on Indian streaming platforms.
