Geography
Yadgir district is situated on the Deccan Plateau. It is bounded by Kalaburagi (Gulbarga) district to the north, Raichur district to the south and west, and the state of Telangana to the east. The Krishna and Bhima rivers flow through the district and form parts of its boundaries, supporting agriculture in the region. The terrain is largely a semi-arid plain, with black cotton soil suitable for the cultivation of cotton, pulses, and cereals.
Administration
The district is divided into taluks for revenue and administrative purposes, including Yadgir, Shahapur, Shorapur (Surpur), Hunsagi, Gurmitkal, and Wadagera. The district is administered by a Deputy Commissioner, while law and order is supervised by a Superintendent of Police. Local self-government is exercised through the Zilla Panchayat at the district level and Taluk and Gram Panchayats at lower tiers.
Economy
The economy of Yadgir is predominantly agrarian. Major crops include paddy (particularly along the Krishna and Bhima river belts), cotton, tur (red gram), jowar, and groundnut. The district also has handloom weaving traditions, and parts of it benefit from irrigation through the Krishna basin canal systems, including projects associated with the Narayanpur reservoir.
Demographics and culture
Kannada is the principal language of the district, while Urdu and Telugu are also spoken, reflecting the district's location near the Telangana border and its history under the Nizam of Hyderabad. The cultural landscape combines elements of north Karnataka traditions with Deccani influences in cuisine, music, and architecture.
History
The region encompassing present-day Yadgir district has a long history, having been part of successive Deccan polities including the Rashtrakutas, Chalukyas, Kalyani Chalukyas, Yadavas, the Bahmani Sultanate, the Bijapur Sultanate, and later the Nizam's dominions of Hyderabad. Shorapur (Surpur) was a notable principality in the 19th century associated with Raja Venkatappa Nayaka, who took part in the events of 1857. After the Police Action of 1948, the territory became part of Hyderabad State and, following the States Reorganisation Act of 1956, was incorporated into the Mysore State (renamed Karnataka in 1973) as part of Gulbarga district.
