Overview
Yeduguri Sandinti Jagan Mohan Reddy (born 21 December 1972), commonly known as Jagan, is an Indian politician and a Member of the Legislative Assembly representing the Pulivendula Assembly constituency in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly. He previously served as the 17th Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and is the founding president of the YSR Congress Party. He is the son of Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, a former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, and Y. S. Vijayamma, and the brother of Y. S. Sharmila.
Jagan Mohan Reddy began his political career in the Indian National Congress and was elected as the Member of Parliament from Kadapa in 2009. After the death of his father in a helicopter crash in 2009, he undertook an Odarpu Yatra, a consoling tour, across the state. He subsequently left the Congress Party and established the YSR Congress Party, the acronym of which echoes his father's initials.
On 27 May 2012, Reddy was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with charges relating to the alleged amassing of assets. The CBI and the Enforcement Directorate also summoned a number of companies linked to investments in his businesses. His judicial custody was extended during the investigation, and his bail petitions were dismissed by the Supreme Court of India on multiple occasions in 2012 and 2013. He was released from jail on 24 September 2013.
In the 2014 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections, the YSR Congress Party won 67 seats, and Reddy became the Leader of the Opposition. In the 2019 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections, he led the party to a decisive victory, winning 151 of the 175 assembly seats, and was sworn in as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.
