Windamere Hotel

Overview

The Windamere Hotel is a heritage hotel located on Observatory Hill in Darjeeling, in the Indian state of West Bengal. Originally established as a boarding lodge for British and European tea planters and bachelors in the late nineteenth century, it was later converted into a hotel and has since become one of the best-known colonial-era establishments in the Eastern Himalayas.

Background

Darjeeling developed as a hill station under the British in the nineteenth century, becoming a summer retreat for officials of the Bengal Presidency and a centre of the tea industry. Observatory Hill, around which the town's Mall and Chowrasta were laid out, became one of the principal locations for European residences, clubs and lodgings. The Windamere began life in this setting as a cottage-style boarding house catering to planters from the surrounding tea estates of Darjeeling and Sikkim.

History

The property was converted into a hotel in the period around the end of British rule in India, retaining the layout and atmosphere of its earlier boarding-house years. The hotel comprises a cluster of cottages and bungalows arranged on the hillside, with sitting rooms, a dining room and verandahs that look out towards the Kanchenjunga range.

Over the decades the Windamere has hosted a varied clientele drawn from the worlds of travel, literature, diplomacy and the former princely families of the eastern Himalayas, and it is frequently cited in writing on Darjeeling as an example of a surviving Raj-era institution.

Architecture and ambience

The hotel is known for preserving features associated with the colonial era, including period furniture, fireplaces, traditional afternoon tea service and rooms named after persons and places connected with Darjeeling's history. Its setting on Observatory Hill places it close to the Mahakal Temple, Chowrasta and the Mall, the social heart of the town.

Significance

The Windamere is regarded as part of Darjeeling's built heritage and is often discussed alongside other surviving institutions of the hill station such as the Planters' Club, St. Paul's School and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. It features in travel writing and guidebooks as an example of continuity in the town's hospitality tradition.
