Background
West Siang is one of several districts carved out of the erstwhile Siang Frontier Division of the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA), which was reorganised after Arunachal Pradesh became a Union Territory in 1972 and a full-fledged state in 1987. The district takes its name from the Siang River, the local name for the upper course of the Brahmaputra as it flows through Arunachal Pradesh.
The terrain is predominantly mountainous, comprising forested ridges, river valleys and high-altitude tracts. The economy is largely agrarian, with shifting cultivation (jhum), terraced rice farming, horticulture and small-scale trade forming the basis of livelihoods. The district is connected to the rest of the state primarily by road, with Aalo serving as the principal commercial and administrative centre.
People and culture
The population is largely tribal, with the Galo community forming the dominant group, alongside members of the Adi and other communities. Traditional festivals such as Mopin, celebrated by the Galo, are observed widely in the district. Languages spoken include Galo, Adi and other Tani languages of the Sino-Tibetan family, along with Hindi and English used in administration and education.
Administrative reorganisation
Parts of West Siang district have been separated over time to form new administrative units. Notably, Lepa Rada district was carved out of West Siang in 2017–2018, with its headquarters at Basar. Earlier reorganisations created neighbouring districts in the broader Siang region, including East Siang, Upper Siang and Siang district.
Geography
The district shares borders with several other districts of Arunachal Pradesh, including parts of the Siang valley to the east and the Subansiri region to the west. The Siyom (Yomgo) river, a tributary of the Siang, flows through the district and passes near Aalo. Elevations range from river valley lowlands to high mountain ranges, supporting a variety of forest types from subtropical to temperate.
Significance
West Siang is significant as a cultural heartland of the Galo people and as one of the older administrative units of Arunachal Pradesh. Aalo serves as a regional hub for education, healthcare and commerce in the central belt of the state.
