Background

Before the creation of WBUHS, medical and health science colleges in West Bengal were affiliated to general universities such as the University of Calcutta and the University of Burdwan. With the growth of medical, dental, nursing, and paramedical education in the state, a dedicated health sciences university was constituted to bring these institutions under a single academic and regulatory umbrella, in line with similar bodies established in other Indian states.

Academic role

The university affiliates colleges and institutes offering programmes in:

  • Modern medicine (MBBS, MD, MS, super-speciality and diploma courses)
  • Dentistry (BDS and MDS)
  • Nursing (diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate)
  • Pharmacy
  • Indian systems of medicine, including Ayurveda and Homoeopathy
  • Paramedical and allied health sciences

WBUHS frames syllabi, conducts examinations, awards degrees and diplomas, and oversees academic standards in its affiliated institutions. It also supports research activities and continuing medical education in the state's health sector.

Governance

As a state university, WBUHS functions under the Government of West Bengal. The Governor of West Bengal serves as the Chancellor in the customary manner of state universities, while academic and administrative affairs are led by a Vice-Chancellor, supported by statutory bodies such as the Court, Executive Council, Academic Council, and Faculty Councils for different streams of study.

Significance

WBUHS is one of the principal regulators of health science education in eastern India. By centralising affiliation and examinations for medical and allied colleges, it has standardised curricula across government and private institutions in West Bengal and aligned them with regulations of national bodies such as the National Medical Commission, the Dental Council of India, the Indian Nursing Council, the Pharmacy Council of India, and other apex regulators.
