Background
West Bengal State University was established to decongest the affiliating responsibilities of the University of Calcutta, which had historically administered a very large number of colleges across southern West Bengal. With the steady expansion of higher education in the state, the Government of West Bengal carved out new affiliating universities for specific districts. WBSU was created to take charge of degree colleges located in North 24 Parganas, allowing more focused academic administration, examinations, and curriculum development for that region.
Campus and academics
The main campus is situated at Berunanpukuria in Malikapur, on the outskirts of Barasat town, which is well connected to Kolkata by rail and road. The university is organised into faculties covering the arts, sciences, commerce, and professional studies, with departments offering postgraduate programmes in disciplines such as Bengali, English, history, political science, economics, sociology, philosophy, education, geography, mathematics, physics, chemistry, botany, zoology, microbiology, food and nutrition, and computer science, among others.
In addition to its on-campus postgraduate teaching, WBSU functions primarily as an affiliating university, conducting examinations and awarding degrees for a large number of general degree colleges in North 24 Parganas. These colleges run undergraduate honours and general programmes under the choice-based credit system framework prescribed by the UGC and adopted by the state.
Research and recognition
The university is recognised by the University Grants Commission and offers research programmes leading to the M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in several departments. Faculty research spans the humanities, social sciences, and the natural and applied sciences, often in collaboration with affiliated colleges and other state institutions.
Significance
As one of the affiliating universities created to ease the burden on the University of Calcutta, WBSU plays an important role in expanding access to higher education in the populous suburban and semi-urban belt to the north and east of Kolkata. Its colleges include some of the older and academically prominent institutions of the region, and the university serves a large student community drawn from both urban centres and rural areas of North 24 Parganas.
