Background

The franchise was conceived by producer Firoz A. Nadiadwala, who has been associated with several Hindi comedy ventures including the Hera Pheri and Awara Paagal Deewana properties. The original film was directed by Anees Bazmee and combined the conventions of the masala film with the ensemble comedy tradition that had become popular in Hindi cinema during the 2000s. Central to the series are two flamboyant gangsters, Uday Shetty and Majnu, who repeatedly seek to legitimise themselves and their families through marriage alliances, only to be thwarted by misunderstandings and rival criminals.

Films

Welcome (2007)

Released in December 2007 and directed by Anees Bazmee, Welcome starred Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Nana Patekar, Anil Kapoor, Feroz Khan, Paresh Rawal and Mallika Sherawat. The plot revolves around Rajiv (Akshay Kumar), whose uncle Dr. Ghungroo (Paresh Rawal) is reluctant to allow his marriage to Sanjana (Katrina Kaif), the sister of gangster Uday Shetty (Nana Patekar). The film featured Feroz Khan in one of his final screen roles, as the don RDX. It was a major commercial success and is regarded as a landmark in 2000s Hindi comedy.

Welcome Back (2015)

Welcome Back, also directed by Anees Bazmee, released in September 2015. Nana Patekar and Anil Kapoor reprised their roles as Uday Shetty and Majnu, with Paresh Rawal returning as Dr. Ghungroo. The cast was reshaped with John Abraham, Shruti Haasan, Naseeruddin Shah and Dimple Kapadia joining the ensemble; Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif did not return. The story continues the gangsters' attempts to find suitable matches for the women in their family, this time complicated by a desert-bandit clan led by Wanted Bhai. The film performed strongly at the domestic box office.

Welcome to the Jungle

A third instalment, titled Welcome to the Jungle, was announced by Firoz A. Nadiadwala with Ahmed Khan attached to direct. The project has been promoted as a large ensemble comedy bringing together Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Disha Patani, Raveena Tandon, Jacqueline Fernandez, Paresh Rawal and others, with Nana Patekar also reported to feature. Production has been staged across multiple schedules.

Recurring characters and themes

  • Uday Shetty (Nana Patekar) – a Mumbai-based don who insists on the dignity of his criminal lineage while seeking respectable alliances.
  • Majnu Bhai (Anil Kapoor) – Uday's flamboyant lieutenant, noted for his amateur paintings, a running comic motif.
  • Dr. Ghungroo (Paresh Rawal) – an anxious, marriage-averse uncle whose fear of underworld families drives much of the plot.
  • Comedy of mistaken identity, fake aliases and arranged marriages.
  • Set-piece songs, exotic locations and ensemble climaxes.

Significance

The Welcome series is considered one of the more durable comedy franchises in mainstream Hindi cinema of the 2000s and 2010s, alongside Hera Pheri, Golmaal, Housefull and Dhamaal. The pairing of Nana Patekar and Anil Kapoor as comic dons has been widely cited in popular culture, with dialogues and visual gags – particularly Majnu's paintings and Uday's "control Uday, control" mannerism – becoming part of internet meme vocabulary in India. The films are frequently rerun on Hindi movie television channels.
