Overview

The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) is a state-government controlled centralised test conducted by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board. It serves as the qualifying examination for admission to undergraduate courses such as B.E., B.Tech., B.Pharm. and Architecture in universities, government colleges, and self-financing and private institutes across the State of West Bengal, India.

The examination is taken after the 12th grade for admission to undergraduate (Bachelor's degree) programmes. Candidates who have studied Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English at the 10+2 level are eligible, as these subjects form the basis of the test. Students from the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education, the Central Board of Secondary Education, and the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations sit for the examination.

Role in admissions

WBJEE is used to allocate seats for undergraduate programmes in Engineering, Technology, Pharmacy and Architecture across a range of institutions in West Bengal. These include state universities, government colleges, and self-financing and private institutes. Admission is offered through a centralised counselling and seat allotment process based on candidates' performance in the examination.

The scope of WBJEE has changed over time. Until 2016, the examination was also used as an entrance test for admission to state medical colleges in West Bengal, and was then known as the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Joint Entrance for Medical (WBJEEM). After 2016, medical admissions were no longer routed through this examination, and WBJEE has since been confined to admissions in Engineering/Technology, Pharmacy and Architecture programmes.

Background

As a state-level entrance examination, WBJEE provides a common evaluation mechanism for students from different higher secondary boards seeking admission to professional undergraduate courses within West Bengal. Its conduct by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board ensures a unified merit list across participating institutions, including both government and private colleges in the state. The examination tests the core science and mathematics curriculum studied at the 10+2 level, reflecting the academic prerequisites of the undergraduate programmes for which it serves as the gateway.
