Overview

Volkswagen India is the Indian subsidiary of the German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen AG, responsible for the import, assembly, marketing and after-sales support of Volkswagen-branded passenger vehicles in India. The company forms part of the wider Volkswagen Group's operations in the country, which also include the Audi, Škoda, Porsche and Lamborghini brands.

Background

Volkswagen entered the Indian passenger car market in the late 2000s as part of the Volkswagen Group's broader expansion into emerging markets. The Group's Indian presence was structured around multiple brands, with Škoda Auto having entered earlier and serving as the Group's initial foothold in the country. Volkswagen India was established to introduce the core Volkswagen brand, with a focus on hatchbacks, sedans and, later, sport utility vehicles tailored to Indian conditions.

Manufacturing and operations

Volkswagen vehicles for the Indian market are assembled at the Volkswagen Group's plant at Chakan, near Pune in Maharashtra. The facility produces vehicles for both the domestic market and for export, and supports multiple Group brands. The Pune region has emerged as one of India's principal automotive manufacturing clusters, hosting suppliers and original equipment manufacturers from across the world.

Product range

Over the years, Volkswagen India has offered a range of models in the Indian market, including the Polo hatchback, the Vento compact sedan, and the Jetta and Passat sedans in higher segments. The brand subsequently shifted its focus towards the SUV segment, introducing models developed under the Volkswagen Group's India 2.0 strategy, which emphasised a higher level of localisation on the MQB-A0-IN platform shared with Škoda.

Corporate restructuring

To consolidate the Group's Indian operations, Volkswagen and Škoda merged their Indian entities, with Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited becoming the umbrella company responsible for the Volkswagen, Škoda, Audi, Porsche and Lamborghini brands in India. The restructuring was aimed at improving efficiency, deepening localisation and strengthening the Group's competitive position in the Indian passenger vehicle market.

Significance

Volkswagen India represents one of the more prominent European automotive presences in the Indian market and has played a role in introducing global platforms, safety features and engineering standards to Indian consumers. Its Pune-based manufacturing operations also contribute to India's automotive exports, with vehicles shipped to markets in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
