Vishal–Shekhar is an Indian music composer duo comprising Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani, primarily working in Hindi cinema. The pair has been one of the most prolific composing teams in Bollywood since the early 2000s, scoring music for a wide range of films across romance, action, comedy and dance genres. Beyond film scoring, both members are active as playback singers, live performers and television personalities.

Vishal Dadlani

Vishal Dadlani is a singer, composer and lyricist from Mumbai. He is also the lead vocalist of the Indian rock band Pentagram, one of the country's earliest independent rock acts. Dadlani is known for an aggressive vocal style and has written lyrics for several of the duo's compositions.

Shekhar Ravjiani

Shekhar Ravjiani is a singer and composer, also based in Mumbai. He is recognised for his melodic singing voice and frequently performs the duo's softer, romantic compositions as a playback singer. He has additionally released devotional music as solo work.

Career

Early work

The duo began composing for advertising jingles before moving to film. Their first feature film as music directors was Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi (1999). Subsequent early films included Jhankaar Beats (2003), which received the Filmfare R. D. Burman Award for New Music Talent and helped establish their identity as composers attuned to a young, urban audience.

Mainstream success

Vishal–Shekhar gained wider commercial success in the mid-2000s with soundtracks for films such as Salaam Namaste (2005), Bluffmaster! (2005), Dus (2005) and Ta Ra Rum Pum (2007). They became regular collaborators with Yash Raj Films, composing for projects including Tashan (2008), Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008) and the Dhoom franchise from Dhoom 2 (2006) onwards.

The duo has scored music for films including Om Shanti Om (2007), Anjaana Anjaani (2010), Student of the Year (2012), Chennai Express (2013), Happy New Year (2014), Bang Bang! (2014), Sultan (2016), Tiger Zinda Hai (2017), War (2019) and Pathaan (2023). They have collaborated extensively with directors such as Farah Khan, Siddharth Anand and Kabir Khan, and with leading playback singers across the industry.

Television and live work

Both Vishal and Shekhar have appeared as judges on Indian television music reality shows, most notably various seasons of Indian Idol and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. They tour internationally as a live act, performing their own compositions with a band.

Style and significance

Vishal–Shekhar are noted for blending Western pop and rock production with Hindi film melodic sensibilities. Their work is frequently associated with high-energy dance numbers, large-scale title tracks for action franchises, and contemporary romantic ballads. The duo's longevity across more than two decades has made them one of the defining composing teams of post-2000s Bollywood, alongside contemporaries such as Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy and Pritam.

The duo has received Filmfare and other industry awards for their work, including the Filmfare R. D. Burman Award for New Music Talent for Jhankaar Beats. They have also been nominated multiple times in the Best Music Director category at major Indian film award ceremonies.
