Background
The decision to set up an integrated steel plant at Visakhapatnam was announced by the Government of India in the 1970s, in response to long-standing demands from Andhra Pradesh for a major industrial project in the region. The site, on the Bay of Bengal coast, was chosen for its proximity to the Visakhapatnam port, which facilitates the import of raw materials and the export of finished products.
Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited was incorporated as the corporate entity to own and operate the plant. Unlike the older integrated plants under Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), VSP was conceived as a stand-alone unit under a dedicated company.
History
- 1971: The Government of India announced the establishment of an integrated steel plant at Visakhapatnam.
- 1982: Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited was formed as the corporate entity for the plant.
- 1990s: The major production units, including the blast furnaces, sinter plants, coke ovens, steel melt shop, and rolling mills, were progressively commissioned.
- 1992: The plant was formally dedicated to the nation, marking the start of full-fledged commercial operations.
- 2010: RINL/VSP was conferred Navratna status by the Government of India, recognising its operational and financial autonomy among public sector enterprises.
- 2010s: A major expansion programme was undertaken to raise the plant's hot metal capacity, with the addition of a new blast furnace and downstream facilities.
Operations and Products
VSP is configured to produce long steel products, with its rolling mills geared toward wire rods, structurals, rounds, and reinforcement bars used extensively in construction, infrastructure, and engineering industries. Major facilities at the plant include coke ovens, sinter plants, blast furnaces, a steel melting shop with continuous casting, and light, medium and structural mills.
The plant draws iron ore primarily from mines in the Bailadila region of Chhattisgarh and uses imported and indigenous coking coal. Its coastal location allows efficient handling of bulk cargo through Visakhapatnam port.
Significance
Visakhapatnam Steel Plant is one of the largest industrial establishments in Andhra Pradesh and a major employer in the Visakhapatnam region. It supports a wide ancillary and downstream ecosystem and contributes to India's overall finished steel output. As a Navratna public sector unit, it also occupies an important position in the national steel sector alongside SAIL and other major producers.
The plant has been the subject of public attention in connection with proposals for strategic disinvestment of RINL by the Government of India, which have drawn responses from employees, trade unions, and political parties in Andhra Pradesh.
