Background
Hazaribagh has had a long association with higher education in eastern India, with institutions such as St. Columba's College tracing their origins to the colonial period. Before the creation of Vinoba Bhave University, colleges in the Hazaribagh region were affiliated to Ranchi University. The growth of student numbers and the expansion of higher education in the Chhotanagpur plateau led to the establishment of a separate university for the northern districts of what was then southern Bihar.
The university was established by an Act of the Bihar State Legislature, with its jurisdiction covering the districts of the North Chhotanagpur region. After the formation of Jharkhand in November 2000, the university came under the Government of Jharkhand and continues to function as a state university under the Department of Higher and Technical Education of the state.
Academic structure
The university operates through postgraduate departments on its main campus and through affiliated and constituent colleges. Teaching and research are organised in the broad faculties of:
- Humanities
- Social Sciences
- Science
- Commerce and Management
- Education
- Law
- Medicine and allied health sciences
- Engineering and Technology
The university awards undergraduate, postgraduate, M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees, along with diploma and certificate programmes through its departments and affiliated institutions.
Campus and affiliated colleges
The headquarters and main campus of the university are situated in Hazaribagh. Its affiliating jurisdiction extends across several districts of the North Chhotanagpur division, including Hazaribagh, Koderma, Chatra, Giridih, Ramgarh and surrounding areas. The affiliated network includes long-established institutions such as St. Columba's College, Hazaribagh, along with constituent and minority colleges, government colleges, and private colleges offering general, professional, and teacher-education courses.
Significance
As the principal university for the North Chhotanagpur region, Vinoba Bhave University plays a central role in providing access to higher education in an area with a large rural and tribal population. It serves as the main examining and degree-awarding body for the colleges within its jurisdiction and contributes to research output, teacher training, and professional education in the state. The naming of the university after Vinoba Bhave reflects the influence of Gandhian and social-reform traditions in the region's educational and political life.
