Background
The demand for a separate district carved out of Ballari had been raised for several years by residents and political representatives of the Hosapete region, citing administrative convenience and the distinct economic and cultural character of the area, which is anchored by the Tungabhadra reservoir, the steel and mining belt, and the Hampi heritage zone. The Government of Karnataka announced the creation of Vijayanagara district in late 2020, and it was formally inaugurated as the 31st district of the state on 2 October 2021.
Geography
The district lies in the central-eastern part of Karnataka, in the semi-arid plains drained by the Tungabhadra River. The Tungabhadra Dam, near Hosapete, is one of the principal irrigation works of the region and a major landmark of the district. The terrain is characterised by rocky granite outcrops, particularly around Hampi, interspersed with agricultural plains and reserved forest patches.
Administrative divisions
Vijayanagara district comprises the following taluks:
- Hosapete
- Hagaribommanahalli
- Kottur
- Kudligi
- Harapanahalli
- Hoovina Hadagali
Economy
The economy of Vijayanagara district is shaped by iron ore mining, iron and steel manufacturing, agriculture and tourism. Hosapete and the surrounding belt host major steel plants and ancillary industries, drawing on iron ore from the Sandur–Ballari mining region. Agriculture is sustained substantially by canal irrigation from the Tungabhadra reservoir, with paddy, sugarcane, cotton and millets among the principal crops. Tourism centred on Hampi contributes significantly to the local services sector.
Heritage and tourism
The district contains Hampi, the ruined capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986. The site preserves temples, palaces, market streets, royal enclosures and water structures from the 14th–16th centuries, including the Virupaksha Temple, the Vittala Temple complex with its stone chariot, the Hazara Rama Temple and the Lotus Mahal. Other points of interest include Anegundi, regarded as an early seat of the empire, and the Tungabhadra Dam gardens at Hosapete.
Transport
Hosapete is well connected by rail and road. Hosapete Junction is a significant station on the South Western Railway, linking the district to Bengaluru, Hubballi, Vijayawada and Goa. National and state highways traverse the district, connecting it to Ballari, Davangere and Raichur. The nearest major airports are at Vidyanagar (Toranagallu) and Hubballi.
