Overview

Vidyasagar University is a public state research university located in Midnapore, in the Paschim Medinipur district of southern West Bengal, India. It was established by an Act of the West Bengal legislature, which was notified in the Calcutta Gazette on 24 June 1981. The university is named in the tradition associated with the social reformer and educationist Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar.

The university was founded by Anil Kumar Gain, a mathematician and statistician associated with the University of Cambridge. It functions as an affiliating university, with a number of colleges in the region coming under its academic ambit.

Vidyasagar University offers programmes at both the undergraduate and post-graduate levels across a range of disciplines. As a state university, it caters primarily to students from the southern districts of West Bengal and contributes to higher education and research activities in the region.
