Background
The college traces its lineage to St Mary's College, a Jesuit theologate established in the nineteenth century at Kurseong in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal. For several decades, Kurseong served as the major scholasticate where Jesuits of the Indian assistancy pursued their theological studies. In response to the renewal called for by the Second Vatican Council and the desire to root theological reflection more firmly in the Indian context, the institution was relocated to Delhi in 1972 and renamed Vidyajyoti, a Sanskrit term meaning "Light of Knowledge."
Academic programmes
Vidyajyoti offers ecclesiastical degrees in theology, including the Bachelor of Theology and licentiate-level programmes, in addition to short courses and renewal programmes for clergy and religious. The curriculum integrates the standard tracts of systematic, biblical, moral, and pastoral theology with attention to interreligious dialogue, particularly with Hinduism, Islam, and Sikhism, as well as social engagement and contextual Indian theology.
Vidyajyoti Journal of Theological Reflection
The college publishes the Vidyajyoti Journal of Theological Reflection, a long-running monthly periodical that is among the most widely circulated Catholic theological journals in India. The journal carries articles on biblical studies, doctrinal questions, church history, and contemporary social and pastoral issues, and is read by scholars, clergy, and religious across Asia.
Significance
Vidyajyoti has been associated with the development of Indian Christian theology and has hosted or formed several theologians who have contributed to the inculturation of Christian thought in the subcontinent. Its faculty and alumni have been engaged in dialogue with Indian philosophical and religious traditions, liberation-oriented reflection, and the social teaching of the Church. The institute also collaborates with other theological centres in India through bodies such as the Indian Theological Association.
