Ramanaidu, founded Suresh Productions, one of the largest film production houses in South India, named after Venkatesh's elder brother D. Suresh Babu. Despite the family's strong cinema background, Venkatesh initially pursued academics, completing his schooling in the United States and later returning to India for his undergraduate studies at Loyola College in Chennai. He went back to the United States for a Master of Business Administration before entering films at his father's encouragement.
Career
Early career (1986–1990)
Venkatesh made his acting debut in Kaliyuga Pandavulu (1986), directed by A. Kodandarami Reddy and produced by Suresh Productions. The film won him the Nandi Award for Best Male Debut. He followed it with films such as Brahma Rudrulu (1987) and Prema (1989), which established him as a romantic lead.
Rise to stardom (1990s)
The 1990s marked Venkatesh's emergence as a top star in Telugu cinema. Bobbili Raja (1990), directed by B. Gopal, became a major commercial success. Other notable films of the decade include Coolie No. 1 (1991), Chanti (1992), Sundarakanda (1992), Abbai Gari Pelli (1994), Pavithra Bandham (1996) and Preminchukundam Raa (1997). He earned the moniker "Victory Venkatesh" during this period due to a string of successful releases.
His performance in Kshemamga Velli Labhamga Randi (2000) and earlier socially themed films broadened his image beyond conventional commercial cinema. The devotional film Sri Manjunatha (2001), directed by K. Raghavendra Rao, in which he played the lead role of a devotee of Shiva, became a notable success in both Telugu and Kannada.
2000s
Venkatesh continued to balance family-oriented dramas and commercial entertainers. Films such as Nuvvu Naaku Nachav (2001), Malliswari (2004), Lakshmi (2006) and Aadavari Matalaku Arthale Verule (2007) were widely seen as commercial and critical successes. Aadavari Matalaku Arthale Verule, directed by Selvaraghavan, won him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu.

The 2010s saw him appear in films including Namo Venkatesa (2010), Bodyguard (2012, a remake of the Malayalam film of the same name), Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu (2013, alongside Mahesh Babu), Drushyam (2014, the Telugu remake of the Malayalam thriller Drishyam), Gopala Gopala (2015, with Pawan Kalyan), Babu Bangaram (2016) and F2: Fun and Frustration (2019).
