Background

Venkatesh Iyer was born and raised in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, in a Tamil family. He pursued formal education alongside cricket, completing a Bachelor of Commerce and qualifying as a Chartered Accountant, a relatively unusual academic path for a professional Indian cricketer. He came up through Madhya Pradesh's age-group sides before breaking into senior domestic cricket.

Domestic career

Iyer made his List A debut for Madhya Pradesh in the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy and his first-class debut for the state in the Ranji Trophy in the same season. He gradually established himself as a top-order batter who could also contribute with medium-pace overs. He was a key member of the Madhya Pradesh side that won the Ranji Trophy in the 2021–22 season, the state's first Ranji title, contributing significantly with the bat through the campaign.

Indian Premier League

Iyer was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders for the 2021 IPL season. He made his IPL debut during the UAE leg of that season and immediately impressed as an opening batter, striking quick half-centuries and helping KKR reach the final, which they lost to Chennai Super Kings.

He has remained a regular in the KKR set-up across subsequent seasons. At the IPL 2025 mega auction, KKR re-acquired him for a substantial sum, making him one of the highest-priced Indian players at that auction. He was also appointed vice-captain of the franchise during this period.

International career

On the back of his IPL performances, Iyer was selected for the Indian senior team for the home Twenty20 International series against New Zealand in November 2021, where he made his T20I debut. He was subsequently included in white-ball squads for series against the West Indies and Sri Lanka, and made his One Day International debut in 2022. His international appearances have been intermittent, with selectors using him primarily as a batting all-rounder option for the limited-overs sides.

Playing style

Iyer is known for his ability to take on pace bowling in the powerplay overs, using his height and reach to drive and pull. As a left-hander he provides a useful combination at the top of the order, and his right-arm medium pace gives captains an additional bowling option, particularly on slower surfaces.
