Background

The Kongu region around Erode has historically been a hub of agriculture, textiles and small industries, and the latter half of the twentieth century saw rapid expansion of technical education in this belt. Velalar College of Engineering and Technology emerged as part of this trend, joining a cluster of engineering colleges established to serve students from Erode, Tiruppur, Salem, Namakkal and surrounding districts. The institution takes its name from the Velalar community, a prominent agrarian community of Tamil Nadu, after which the parent trust is also named.

The Velalar group of institutions includes schools, an arts and science college and the engineering college, with a shared focus on accessible higher education in the Kongu belt. The engineering college campus is situated on the outskirts of Erode along the Erode–Perundurai road, providing a relatively quiet, semi-urban setting for academic activity.
