Background
The institution was established as a medical college to extend modern medical education and tertiary healthcare to the western districts of Odisha, a region that historically lacked large referral hospitals. Located on the banks of the Mahanadi near the Hirakud Dam, the campus lies in Burla, a township adjoining Sambalpur city. Over the decades the hospital has grown into a multi-specialty teaching facility catering to patients from across western Odisha and adjoining districts of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.
Academics
VIMSAR offers undergraduate medical education leading to the MBBS degree along with postgraduate training in various clinical and pre-clinical disciplines, including MD, MS and diploma courses. The institute also runs nursing and paramedical training programmes attached to the teaching hospital. Departments span basic sciences such as anatomy, physiology and biochemistry, alongside clinical specialities including medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, ENT, radiology, anaesthesiology, and community medicine.
Hospital and services
The attached teaching hospital provides inpatient and outpatient services across general and specialist departments. As a tertiary referral centre, it handles cases referred from district headquarters hospitals and community health centres in western Odisha. Facilities include emergency and trauma care, intensive care units, operation theatres, diagnostic laboratories, and imaging services.
Significance
VIMSAR is one of the older government medical colleges in Odisha and is regarded, along with SCB Medical College, Cuttack and MKCG Medical College, Berhampur, as one of the principal pillars of state-run medical education and public healthcare in the state. Its location makes it the chief tertiary care destination for a largely rural and tribal population in the western part of Odisha.
