Geography
Vasind lies in the foothill belt between the Mumbai metropolitan plains and the Western Ghats, in the Bhatsa river valley. The terrain is part of the larger catchment that feeds the Bhatsa Dam, a major source of drinking water for Mumbai. The Mumbai–Agra National Highway (NH 160, formerly NH 3) passes through the area.
Transport
Vasind railway station is on the Central Railway's Kasara suburban line, served by Mumbai suburban (local) trains operating between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus / Kalyan and Kasara. Several long-distance mail and express trains running on the Mumbai–Bhusawal–Nashik route also pass through, though most do not halt. The town is accessible by road from Kalyan, Bhiwandi and Shahapur.
Economy and industry
Vasind hosts an industrial belt anchored by a large galvanised steel plant historically associated with Jindal Iron and Steel Company (JISCO) and now part of the JSW Steel group. The plant produces galvanised and colour-coated steel sheets and is among the principal employers in the locality. Ancillary units, transport services and small businesses serving railway commuters form the rest of the local economy. Surrounding areas remain agricultural, with paddy as the dominant kharif crop.
Civic status
Vasind is administered as a census town within Shahapur taluka and falls under the jurisdiction of the Thane Zilla Parishad for rural local government functions. For revenue and policing, it comes under the Shahapur tehsil administration.
