Background
The Thaikkattu Mooss family belongs to the Ashtavaidya tradition of Kerala, a group of Namboothiri Brahmin physician families who historically practised the eight branches of Ayurveda. The honorific "Vaidyaratnam" was conferred on a member of this family in recognition of contributions to traditional medicine, and the title later became part of the institution's name.
Activities
The company produces a range of Ayurvedic preparations including kashayams (decoctions), arishtams and asavams (fermented preparations), ghritams (medicated ghee), tailams (medicated oils), lehyams (herbal confections), churnams (powders), and tablets. Production combines classical formulations described in Ayurvedic texts with modern manufacturing practices.
Allied to the manufacturing operations, the group also runs Ayurvedic clinical and treatment facilities offering panchakarma and other traditional therapies, along with educational and research initiatives in Ayurveda.
Significance
Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala is part of the broader ecosystem of Kerala Ayurveda, alongside other major manufacturers such as Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala and Arya Vaidya Pharmacy. Its continued association with the Ashtavaidya tradition links contemporary commercial production with the classical scholarly lineage of Kerala's traditional medicine.
