Background
The group was founded by Vijay Sankeshwar, an entrepreneur from Karnataka who began his transport business with a single truck. The "VRL" name is derived from Vijayanand Roadlines, the original transport venture that grew into a pan-India logistics operator. Vijay Sankeshwar has also been associated with public life, having served as a Member of Parliament from the Dharwad North constituency.
The day-to-day affairs of the listed entity have been led by Vijay Sankeshwar along with his son Anand Sankeshwar, who serves in a senior managerial capacity at VRL Logistics.
Operations
The group's operations are centred on surface transport and related services:
- Goods transport: less-than-truckload (LTL) and full-truckload (FTL) services connecting major cities, towns and industrial hubs across India.
- Passenger transport: an inter-city luxury and semi-luxury bus network, particularly strong in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu.
- Courier and parcel: priority parcel and courier services riding on the company's own road network.
- Allied businesses: the wider group has at various times had interests in print media, wind power generation and air-charter services.
VRL maintains a large fleet of trucks and buses, along with an extensive network of branches, transhipment hubs and booking offices. The company has historically operated in-house vehicle maintenance facilities and driver training infrastructure to support its fleet.
Timeline
- 1976: Vijay Sankeshwar enters the road transport business in northern Karnataka, laying the foundation of what would become VRL.
- 1980s–1990s: Expansion of the goods transport network beyond Karnataka into neighbouring states.
- 1990s onwards: Diversification into passenger bus services, courier and other allied lines.
- 2015: VRL Logistics Limited completes its initial public offering and is listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange of India.
Significance
VRL is regarded as one of the largest privately owned commercial fleet operators in India by number of vehicles, and is among the prominent organised players in a road transport sector that remains highly fragmented. Its presence is particularly strong in southern and western India, and it is often cited as a notable enterprise originating from north Karnataka, contributing to the region's commercial profile alongside cities such as Hubballi and Belagavi.
