Geography
Uttarpara stands on the right bank of the Hooghly, opposite the northern reaches of Kolkata. The town lies along the Grand Trunk Road and the Howrah–Bardhaman main railway line of the Eastern Railway. Its terrain is part of the alluvial Gangetic plain, and it adjoins Hindmotor and Konnagar to the north and Bally (across the river and to the south) along the metropolitan corridor.
History
Uttarpara grew during the 19th century as a centre of Bengali zamindari families and the Bengal Renaissance. The Mukherjee family of Uttarpara was prominent in this period; Joykrishna Mukherjee, a noted zamindar and social reformer, contributed significantly to public life in the town. He founded the Uttarpara Joykrishna Public Library in 1859, which is regarded as one of the earliest free public libraries in India and in Asia.
Uttarpara is also associated with Sri Aurobindo, who delivered his celebrated Uttarpara Speech at the library on 30 May 1909, shortly after his release in the Alipore Bomb Case. The speech is considered a turning point in his transition from political activism to spiritual philosophy.
The Uttarpara Kotrung Municipality was constituted in the 19th century, and the town developed further in the 20th century as an industrial and residential suburb of Kolkata, with the Hindustan Motors automobile plant established in 1948 at neighbouring Hindmotor playing a major role in the local economy.
Civic administration
The town is governed by the Uttarpara Kotrung Municipality, which administers Uttarpara, Kotrung, Bhadrakali and adjoining areas. It falls within the Serampore subdivision of Hooghly district and is part of the Uttarpara Vidhan Sabha constituency, which in turn lies within the Hooghly Lok Sabha constituency.
