Overview

Utkal University (UU) is a public, teaching-cum-affiliating university located in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Established in 1943, it is the oldest university in Odisha and is regarded as the seventeenth-oldest university in India.

In its early years, the university operated from Ravenshaw College. The foundation stone of its present campus at Vani Vihar in Bhubaneswar was laid by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India, on 1 January 1958. The campus was subsequently inaugurated by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the second President of India, on 2 January 1963.

The Vani Vihar campus, spread over an area of 399.9 acres, is situated in the heart of Bhubaneswar. As a teaching-cum-affiliating institution, the university combines on-campus instruction with the affiliation of colleges.

In 2016, Utkal University adopted as its theme song the first three stanzas of the poem "Tunga Sikhar Chula" by Godabarish Mishra, one of the founding members of the university.
