Overview
The University of Mysore is a public state university located in Mysuru, Karnataka, India. It was inaugurated on 27 July 1916 during the reign of Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV and the premiership of Sir M. Visvesvaraya. The Maharaja served as its first Chancellor, while H. V. Nanjundaiah was appointed as the first Vice-Chancellor.
The institution holds a notable place in the history of higher education in India, being the first university established outside the British-administered Indian provinces and the sixth in the Indian subcontinent as a whole. It was also the first university to be set up in the region that is now Karnataka. The university functions as an affiliating type state university and was recognised as autonomous within the Republic of India on 3 March 1956, when it gained recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The University of Mysore is recognised by the UGC for offering higher education degree courses both on-campus and through online modes. As of July 2013, it was accredited with "Grade A" by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
The Mysore University Library is among the major academic resources of the institution, comprising over 800,000 books, 2,400 journal titles, and 100,000 volumes of journals. The main campus includes facilities such as an amphitheatre, an auditorium, a swimming pool, and hostel accommodation for both men and women.
