Overview

The University of Kerala, commonly referred to as Kerala University (KU), is a public state university located in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, India. Formerly known as the University of Travancore, it was the first university to be established in the region and is among the earliest universities in the country.

The university was established in 1937 through a promulgation by the Maharajah of Travancore, Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, who also served as its first Chancellor. C. P. Ramaswamy Iyer, the then Diwan (Prime Minister) of the State, was appointed as its first Vice-Chancellor. By convention, the Governor of Kerala serves as the Chancellor of the university.

The University of Kerala has a wide academic footprint, with over 150 affiliated colleges across the region. Its academic structure comprises sixteen faculties and 43 Departments of teaching and research, covering a broad range of disciplines in the arts, sciences, humanities and professional studies.

The university is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with the highest grade of 'A++', having scored 3.67 points out of 4. Its ISO transliteration is rendered as Kēraḷa Sarvakālāśāla.
