Background
The university takes its name from Gour Banga, a historical region centred on the medieval city of Gour (Gauda), which served as a capital under several dynasties including the Palas, Senas and the Bengal Sultanate. The area around Malda contains significant archaeological remains from these periods, and the institution's mandate includes promoting study of the region's history, culture and languages.
UGB was carved out of the territorial jurisdiction of the University of North Bengal in order to bring a dedicated state university closer to students in the southern part of North Bengal. Many degree colleges in the three districts of Malda, Uttar Dinajpur and Dakshin Dinajpur, which had earlier been affiliated with the University of North Bengal, were transferred to UGB upon its establishment.
Academics
The university operates through faculties covering arts, science, commerce and education, with departments offering postgraduate teaching and research. Subjects taught include Bengali, English, history, political science, geography, economics, education, mathematics, physics, chemistry, botany, zoology, computer science and management, among others. The university also conducts research leading to MPhil and PhD degrees.
Affiliated colleges across the three districts deliver undergraduate programmes under the university's curriculum, with examinations and degrees administered centrally by UGB.
Campus
The main campus is situated at Mokdumpur on the outskirts of English Bazar (Malda town), close to National Highway 12. The campus houses academic departments, administrative offices, the central library, hostels and other student facilities.
Governance
As a state public university, UGB is governed in accordance with the laws of the Government of West Bengal regulating state universities. It is headed by a Vice-Chancellor, supported by a Registrar and statutory bodies such as the Court, Executive Council and Faculty Councils. The Governor of West Bengal serves as the ex-officio Chancellor.
The university is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India.
Significance
UGB plays a central role in higher education access for students in Malda and the two Dinajpur districts, an area that historically lagged behind in tertiary education infrastructure. By absorbing affiliating responsibilities for colleges in the region and offering postgraduate study locally, the university has reduced reliance on institutions in Siliguri and Kolkata for advanced education.
