Geography

Udhampur lies in the lower and middle Himalayan belt of the Jammu region, with elevations rising from the Shivalik foothills to higher ridges in the north and east. The district is drained by tributaries of the Chenab river, including the Tawi. The terrain is largely mountainous and forested, with pine, deodar and oak being common. The district shares boundaries with Kathua, Jammu, Reasi, Ramban and Doda districts.

Administration

The district is part of the Jammu division and is administered by a Deputy Commissioner. It is subdivided into tehsils and community development blocks, with Udhampur town serving as the principal urban centre. Other notable towns and localities include Chenani, Ramnagar, Majalta and Panchari.

History

The area corresponding to present-day Udhampur was historically part of the Dogra principalities and later the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir under the Dogra dynasty founded by Maharaja Gulab Singh in 1846. Ramnagar and Chenani were among the small jagirs of the region prior to integration. Following the accession of the princely state to India in 1947, the area became part of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. After the reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019, it became a district of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

Several districts have been carved out of the original Udhampur district over the decades, including Reasi and Ramban, which were created as separate districts in 2007.

Economy and infrastructure

The economy of Udhampur is primarily agrarian, with maize, wheat, rice and pulses being commonly cultivated. Horticulture, including apples, citrus fruits and walnuts, is significant in higher reaches. The district hosts important transport infrastructure: NH-44 passes through it, and the Udhampur railway station is a key terminus on the Jammu–Baramulla rail link being progressively extended into the Kashmir Valley. The Chenani–Nashri road tunnel (also known as the Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel), one of India's longest road tunnels, lies partly in the district and was inaugurated in 2017, significantly reducing travel time on the Jammu–Srinagar highway.

Defence presence

Udhampur is the headquarters of the Northern Command of the Indian Army, which is responsible for operations along the Line of Control and the international border in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The town also hosts an air force station and other defence establishments, making the cantonment a major component of the local urban fabric.

Traditional Dogra cuisine, folk music and festivals such as Lohri, Baisakhi and Navratri are widely observed.
